Business insurance
basics for beginners

Never bought business insurance before? This guide explains what you need to know — what it is, why it matters, what to buy first, and how to keep costs reasonable.

The most common questions, answered

What is business insurance?

Business insurance is a set of policies that protect your company from financial losses caused by accidents, lawsuits, natural disasters, theft, and other unexpected events. Unlike personal insurance (which covers you as an individual), business insurance covers your company's assets, liabilities, and operations.

Why do I need it?

Three reasons: legal requirements (workers comp is mandatory in most states), contractual requirements (clients and landlords require proof of coverage), and financial protection (a single lawsuit or disaster can bankrupt an uninsured business — insurance keeps your personal assets separate from business liabilities).

How much does it cost?

Most small businesses pay $1,500–$5,000/year for a basic coverage package (GL + property or BOP). Workers comp varies by industry and payroll. Call CCA for a free quote tailored to your specific business — we'll give you real numbers, not estimates.

What should I buy first?

Start with: (1) General liability — required by almost everyone and the foundation of business coverage. (2) Workers compensation — if you have employees. (3) BOP or commercial property — if you have a physical location or significant equipment. Build from there based on your specific risks.

What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?

A COI is a one-page document that proves you have insurance. Clients, landlords, and general contractors routinely request COIs before signing contracts or allowing you on a job site. CCA issues COIs same-day on request.

Do I need insurance if I work from home?

Usually yes. Your homeowner's policy excludes business activities. If you meet clients at home, ship products, or keep business inventory at home, you need business coverage. Even home-based consultants should carry GL and professional liability.

Your 5-step getting-started checklist

1

Identify your exposures

What could go wrong? Employee injuries, client lawsuits, property damage, professional errors, auto accidents?

2

Check your contracts

What insurance do your clients, landlord, or lender require? That sets your minimum requirements.

3

Get a quote

Contact CCA — we'll ask the right questions and build a coverage recommendation for your specific business.

4

Review the policy

Understand what's covered and what's excluded. Ask your agent to explain anything unclear.

5

Review annually

As your business grows and changes, your coverage should too. Review at renewal every year.
